"Daughters of the Dust" tells the story of a family of African-Americans who have lived for many years on a Southern offshore island, and of how they come together one day in 1902 to celebrate their ancestors before some of them leave for the North. The film is narrated by an unborn child, and ancestors already dead also seem to be as present as the living.。5500万年前，一种陌生的生物出现在了高高的树梢上。随着这个神秘生物在树梢上跳出第一步，灵长类动物家族诞生了——我们的家族。我们的灵长类族谱上有四百多个成员的名字：长臂猿、眼镜猴、蜘蛛猴、黑猩猩、吼猴、狒狒、狐猴、猕猴……人类出现之前，我们这些小小的近亲各出奇招，适应不断变化的环境：长臂猿有修长的手臂；眼镜猴有大大的眼睛；狒狒生活在最复杂的社会群体里；还有猴子学会了开牡蛎、砸坚果……。
